Working together against climate change

We are confronted with the consequences of climate change every day: high temperatures, heavy rainfall, and floods are becoming more and more common. It has a huge impact on our living environment and on nature. It also has consequences for food security and the availability of raw materials. Climate change is largely caused by CO₂e emissions. A significant part of these emissions, approximately 30 percent worldwide, comes from the food industry (Nature, 2021). As an important player in the Dutch food industry, Jumbo feels responsible for ensuring that these emissions are reduced.
  • After the energy sector, the food industry is the highest emitter of CO2? (source)
  • On average, the Dutch emit 16 tons of CO2e per year? (source)
  • As a company, Jumbo emits approximately 8 million tons of CO2e every year? (source: Annual Report)
  • Jumbo wants to be completely climate neutral by 2050?

Our impact – Scopes 1, 2 and 3

We are committed to reducing our footprint by making our supermarkets, distribution centres, and fleet (scopes 1 and 2) more sustainable. Our influence on these CO2e emissions is significant, and we can do a lot to reduce them. We are on course to achieving our objectives for scopes 1 and 2. The vast majority of emissions occurs in our product chains (scope 3), which is why cooperation with our suppliers is crucial. Jumbo recently committed to the Science Based Target initiative: a collaboration between the UN, the WWF and the World Resources Institute, among others, to reduce CO2e emissions worldwide, based on the Paris Climate Agreement.  This means that our climate goals for scopes 1, 2 and 3 are based on scientifically substantiated calculations. Later this year, we will also submit our climate goals to SBTi for approval.

Collaboration with suppliers

Collaboration with our suppliers is crucial if we want to reduce the CO2e emissions in our entire chain, because that is where we make the most impact. For this purpose, we have drawn up a CO₂ reduction program. On this page, you can read more about this program and also check out our road map, with instructional videos, useful information and resources on how we developed this objective for scopes 1, 2 and 3. It also lists Frequently Asked Questions.

What do CO2e and scopes 1, 2 and 3 mean?

Every company has processes that release greenhouse gases (CO2e) in the air, and those emissions contribute to climate change. This is called a ‘footprint’, in other words, what we actually leave behind on Earth. These can be nitrogen, carbon, methane, nitrous oxide or other greenhouse gases (see also MilieuCentraal). We often talk about CO2 when we actually mean CO2e. CO2 stands for carbon dioxide and the ‘e’ stands for the equivalents (nitrogen, methane, nitrous oxide, etc.). People, companies and ultimately countries all produce these emissions. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) is specifically developed for companies, to provide guidance on where emissions occur and what we can do about them. This protocol comprises three parts, that we call ‘scopes’.

  • Scope 1 - our own business activities
  • Scope 2 - energy purchased from third parties
  • Scope 3 - activities by other parties in our value chain

This means that your scopes 1, 2 and 3 are our scope 3. This video explains the different scopes.
