CO₂e reduction program

Reducing CO₂e together

Achieving the goal agreed in the Paris Agreement – maximum global warming of 1.5 degrees – is a major challenge for us all. At the same time, we know that it is feasible if we join forces and work together. We desperately need the help of our suppliers, but we also want to support and help suppliers where possible. One of the ways we do that, is through our CO₂ reduction program.

1. Measurements

In order to understand our scope 3 (scopes 1, 2 and 3 of our suppliers) and to be able to reduce and report in a targeted manner, we need good insight into the emissions from the operations and value chains of our suppliers. If we know where the largest CO2e emissions occur, we can make improvements per product. At the moment, everyone works with general data, while insight into product-specific data would be the desirable option. We believe that becoming more sustainable together also means gaining more insight and measuring data together. Jumbo is researching various options to see how we can work towards a uniform and improved data collection method. Ideally, we want to work together with other parties, to create a new standard for the entire market. We are currently planning discussions about this topic within the retail sector.

What are we asking our suppliers to do?
Because we are still in the exploratory phase of a uniform data collection method, we are not yet asking our suppliers to provide scope 1, 2 and 3 data. What we are asking you to do, is to get started mapping out your own scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and to set a Science Based Target. This is a good first step, and also good preparation for the upcoming CSRD legislation. Check out our road map on how you can set scope 1, 2 and 3 goals.

2. Learning together

We have recently taken the steps required to map our own scopes, and we believe it is important to share this knowledge via this platform. This allows us to help you get started. In addition, we are going to organize working sessions to advance the method, discuss problems and demonstrate our progress. More information will follow later.

What are we asking our suppliers to do?
We would like to share our experiences with you, but at the same time, we still have plenty to learn ourselves! If you have any insights and would like to share them with us, please contact your Jumbo account manager.

3. Investments & innovations

At Jumbo, we invest in making our operations, supermarkets, logistics chain and product range more sustainable. We will of course continue and grow our investments in this field. Jumbo is also making the financial resources available to finance initiatives of our PL suppliers that have a distinctive positive impact on CO2e reduction and that make a significant contribution to the scope 3 climate goal. We are currently working on and elaborating our ideas, and will let you know soon which innovations qualify.

4. Reporting & communication

Jumbo reports on its progress in the field of sustainability via the website jumborapportage.com. We also publish an annual update as part of our annual report. At the same time, we communicate about developments with regard to the new measurement method, our collaborations with suppliers in achieving major reductions at product or category level, and successes achieved in our scope 3 reductions.
